EXERCISE
Letter to Your Past Self
Youâll need:
A pen you love to write with
Blank sheets of white paper
A lighter or matches
A fire-safe place for disposal (a fire pit, a non-flammable bin/bucket, etc.)
Sit down in a calm, quiet location. Close your eyes and breathe in and out slowly for one minute to center yourself. Then write yourself a letter addressing things that have happened in the past. This may take you a while to write. Be patient and gentle with yourself during this process. You can write down things from the past that have hurt you or loss youâve experienced. Write about things you need to forgive yourself for or advice your current self would give your younger self. There are no rules for what you can write aboutâthe only requisite is that you write about things that happened in the past.
Itâs normal if you find this writing exercise emotionally exhausting. Sometimes self-care involves the acknowledgment of painful moments to help you fully release them.
After you have finished writing your letter, go someplace where you can light a fire safely. Close your eyes and internally acknowledge that youâre ready to close the door on things from your past that are holding you back. Say good-bye to unhealthy patterns or lingering negativity from the past. Now light the letter on fire and as the words turn to ash, tell yourself that the pain inside of you is also disintegrating. Discard the burned letter in a fire-safe place of disposal.
EXERCISE
Letter to Your Future Self
Youâll need:
A pen you love to write with
A thick black marker
Blank sheets of white paper
A glass bottle with a lid/cork
A shovel
Without any external distractions, use the thin black marker to write a letter about your hopes, dreams, and even your fears. The only rule here is that everything you write about needs to be hypothetical and in the futureâthere should be nothing in this letter that has already come to fruition. Write candidly and openly. Allow yourself to explore your dreams and fears freely.
When youâre done writing, take the thick black marker and cross off any fears you wrote down: this sends a signal to your mind that these fears are gone. Now youâre only going to put thought and intention toward achieving your dreams. Roll up the letter and place it in a bottle. Find a location where you can dig a hole to bury it. Tell yourself that youâre permanently burying your fears and planting a seed for your dreams to grow.
EXERCISE
Love Letter to Yourself
Youâll need:
A pen you love to write with
Blank sheet of white paper
A picture frame that fits the sheet of paper
Write yourself a madly passionate love letter. Praise yourself. Pretend that youâre the one true love of your life (spoiler: you should be). Focus on things that make you beautiful (physically, mentally, and emotionally), your unique qualities, your remarkable traits, or things you just really like/love about yourself. When youâre done writing, frame your love letter and place it in a special spot. Read it every day until your loving thoughts about yourself become who you truly are.
